    Repro ribbon

Picked up a load of this stuff, I believe its repro due to the 4mm rule on the black and white stripes, I do take it this was standard and no exceptions? It passes the blacklight test, burn test, and water drop test. Just checking if I missed any exception to the rule.

    Cheers

    Hallo münster.
I think the ribbon is a reproduction. The stitching along the outer edges looks a bit thin.

Peter,,everything else seems good, I do like the loops on the outer edge, all that shoots it dow for me is the width of the black stripe. Would there be a variation in width?

Can you enlighten us (okay, me) about this "4mm rule"?

I ahve a Shinkelform EK2 that has a thinner ribbon than my other EK2's. Is this normal?

Hi George, Thats what I read in the WAF database on specs...Was it worded correctly in the database?

I did show it to my partner over here and he said Iam just a paranoid nutcase.

                    Hi MRG

Take a synthetic repro ribbon , drop a drop of water on it and it will not soak the drop up. A non synthetic ribbon will soak it up. The burn test usually proves this anyway. Just whacky Dion tests.

I was with Dion when he managed to snag this ribbon, I must say if its bad it fooled us both. It certainly passed all the 'tests' us collectors carry out.

It quite possibly could be the poor lighting, but I would rather see the orange/red color to the center. Yours appears too red. I recently received an EKII ribbon from EBay that just didn't have the 'feel' a true period ribbon should have. It just wasn't thick enough, felt somewhat limpy. The next day I received another EKII ribbon from my trusted German retailer. It was the real deal. When you feel the real ones for years the fakes just don't look or feel the same. Perhaps some of these ribbons that don't glow, and burn like they should could be postwar pieces still made of silk and without phosphorous in the dye.

I performed a test tonight with both the ribbons mentioned above. I pulled a few threads from the end of each ribbon and lit them on fire. The thread from the original ribbon burned quite fast, but the other slow. And the thread of the original was thinner, while the other was much thicker/heavier thread. They both blacklighted the same, but they didn't burn the same. The other ribbon also had a slightly larger black stripe than the white stripe. The black stripe on the original ribbon was 3mm wide, the white 4.5mm, the red/orange 15mm.

The photo may need some help, I took this in direct sunshine. The burn seemed pretty normal and the feel was less stiff but ok when compared with the several ribbons I went against. The Millimeter thing with the stripes is whats making me not like it.Ill be back home soon to make more photos. This was a pain in the ass to get if anyone remembers my last batch it was from the toy store guy. I had a guest over and he called up saying he had more . This store is in the middle of nowhere and it threw all our plans off. I had one ribbon left from the old batch and noticed the black stripe was off on this one,,I just cant see the German Armed Forces letting something like this go being not uniform standard. The old man AKA "Puppetmaster" (Yes he actually makes puppets like in the 80s horror film) Pretty much gave these away to me. This store he has was a tailor shop back in the era. The last batch I got was all cut and ready to go, these were 100% on the dot , some were lost being on the outside of the batch in poor storage. As I thought about it last night I was laughing if the puppetmaster fabricated an elaborate scam to find a roll and burn me for a ridiculously low sum. As I thought more of the situation I thought of the uniform older ones being cut and these being in a roll in the same packing condition as the last ones. Could this have been a defect batch and tossed aside? Has anyone ever had a batch that didnt meet the standard? Did the factories before shipping out mantain a strict quality control?
