Would you clean up the medal to take off any of the dirt?

i think as Baronvlad.
I would never remove the patina. if the time patina let develop it's the character of the cross.
Much collectors, me enclosed, love mint crosses. They should be so well received due to good circumstances.
A deseamed cross will look never so good and in the most cases it will look polished and you will then repent it.
Your cross looks really nice and please let it like it is.

If I can give you suggestion, don't polish it, the patina shows the age of the cross, its history... maybe it was worn by the holder on a battlefield...
