    EK1 Unmarked

I have attached some images of an unmarked EK1 for opinions, comments, etc. This was my first EK1 purchase about 5 years ago. The core is magnetic and loose. Construction is all correct, although the hinge is a bit off center (is this cause for concern? maybe reworked at some point?). The cross measures 44mmx44mm. If possible, any information on who the maker might be (Karl Gschiemeister, Wien?) would be greatly appreciated. Much thanks in advance for your comments!!

Last one -- the swastika. It is raised about even with the beading. The date is noticeably not as high as compared to the swastika.

              Looks good to me

              Eric,

Though you stated in your description that the cross is magnetic, I believe you made a typo on this as the center appears to be brass.

IMO, this is an early manufactured (unmarked) cross and I like the looks of it.

                Dear Eric,

It is a good and nice looking cross. Probably you have NOT made a mistake saying your cross has a magnetic core. There are a lot of EK 1s that LOOK as if their core was brass or copper, in fact they just have a brass or copper COATED iron core.

I have two crosses with the exact same features as yours, one is a "standard" iron core, the other one has a COPPER coated iron core and a silver plated brass frame. The hinge/pin/catch reminds very much of a Zimmermann cross, however, I think the numerals in the date show slight differences when compared to a "20" marked cross.

Here are the two identical to yours, first the copper coated one.

                Cheers, Frank

...and the other one. Btw, it would not concern me that the hinge on yours is slightly out of center, certainly not reworked, just a bit inaccurate, nothing that´s tragic.
                      Cheers, Frank

The following is to proof that all three crosses shown here so far have the exact same features, right down to the numerals. Note that the fourth numeral shown is that of a Zimmermann "20" marked cross and is clearly different. So it can be quite safely stated that Zimmermann is not the maker of these.

In Gordon´s new book there is a comparison between a Zimmermann cross and a Godet L/50 marked cross that also have practically identical hinge/pin/catch systems. I do not have a Godet cross at hand but I think the Godet crosses have even different numerals, closer to the Zimmermann crosses than to the three shown here.

Interesting would be why Eric thinks these three crosses here could be made by Karl Gschiermeister. Do you have anything that indicated this, Eric? Such as a marked case, etc.?

                            Cheers, Frank
