    This might be of interest....

I scored this "Der Adler" mag from Eban. In it, there is an article about Thiem being awarded the RK. Here is a shot.....wait and check out the close-up.....

...notice that the RK is not a "3/4 eye".
      ...wait for the next picture....

Here is his Wehrmachtfuhrerschein. Same photo, pre-RK. An artist added the RK and also "upped" his rank for the Der Adler article.

This photo was taken in April '39.
The Rk was awarded 21 July 1940.
The magazine was an August 1940 issue.

That´s really cool, Sherlock. Nothing can fool you because you seem to have his whole life in your hands.

I bet you even have the skull of the "Dachshund from da hood"!

          Cheers, Frank (no RK 21.01.2003)

            Hi Frank,

Hey, do you happen to know what kind of car he's driving??(mit hund pic, page 2)?
Included in the group is a letter to Major Thiem from Der Burgermeister. It was written on 19 Juli 1944 from Tutow Flughafen.
It states that Major Thiem's car has been destroyed by bombing on 29 Mai '44. It was parked in a private garage. At least that's what I "think" I've translated out of it. Maybe its actually referring to when they went out and "Got Bombed" and drove the car around??

              Dear Tim,

On the grill it says Steyr 220. Steyr was a car and (military) vehicle brand back then, doesn´t exist anymore nowadays. But I do not really know much about vintage cars, sorry.

              Cheers, Frank

Wow!!! Just goes to show how mis-leading a 'photo' can be when it comes to originality and used as a tool to authenticate something....I wonder how many of the 'portrait' photos showing RKt were upgraded and really don't show the actual award...maybe the few 'round corners' were lifted from the same plate!
                      John

                      Good eye, Tim!
                      Regards,
                      Dave

My cousin, an Artillery Colonel died in Stalingrad days after being awarded the RK. The press took a picture of the RK that was sent to his family and created a collage of the award on a portrait picture of him in uniform.

So yes this was done especially post mortem.

A bit touchy today! All I'm saying is that if Tim didn't have the original award AND an original picture showing it then the Knight's Cross presented above would likely be accepted as (his) original even though it was superimposed!
The same 'test' could certainly apply to the pictured 'round corners' having been 'lifted' from the magazines.

                            Possible. But probable?

You know....the more I look at the 'doctored' photo it REALLY appears that the inner corners are rounded. Will someone please zoom in on the center and post it!
