Rommel´s family lend one of his tunics to the film company when James Mason played the Fieldmarshall.
Obviously the GI thieves missed at least that one...
I think it´s on display in the Panzerschule Munsterlager today.

I visited Rommel´s grave about 10 years ago. It is located in a small city cemetary in Erlingen, near Ulm. In the church next to his marker is a small museum with a couple of Rommel´s uniforms , some medals , battle maps and notes, his bronze death mask and also the original plaster casting for this mask. You could take pictures and the guy even let me hold the plaster casting which was just stored in a box in a cabinet. Me and my friend were the only ones there and the old caretaker was very friendly. If it is still open its worth a look if you are near Ulm. We also checked out his house during the war. Just outside of course , dont know who owns it now and the place he commited suicide. There is a hatch from a panzer attached to a large rock near the site with an inscription. The old fellow told us there used to be a wooden baton Rommel recieved from the Italien government but the museum was broken into and it was stolen along with a Knights Cross that was there also. There was a fake one there to replace it. Years ago I wrote an article for Der Gauleiter along with pictures and they put it in one month. My 15 minutes of fame! Ross

I had heard that the Rommel uniform James Mason used came up missing after filming was completed. I know they had to alter it to fit Mason I hope Ludwig is correct and that my information about it being stolen was wrong.

I always find it amusing that people seem shocked to learn that there were several Rommel (or anybody else) uniforms. I guess nobody ever looks in their own wardrobe and connects the dots

My girlfriend my argue the point but my modest wardrobe can sustain me for a couple of weeks if the washer breaks and my payscale is way below that of your typical Generalfeldarschall!

Its featured in a picture book on German uniforms that came out a while back (I want to say about 2001??) I think Arthur Hays is the author - damn alzheimers.... I'll have to look it up and post the exact reference unless somebody beats me to it.

Update on the Camp Mabry Rommel display. I just spoke to a buddy of mine that knows better than I as he's been there.

They have a pair of boots and a visor hat of Rommel's. The boots came back with a signal corps vet who got them while using Rommel's home as a command post. The boots were nearly lost in a house fire but the vet's young daughter grabbed them before leaving the burning house. She played with them when she went out in the snow and were her favorite "toy". As her house burned she watched wearing Rommel's boots! Years later they were donated to the museum but the writeup about the house fire is on display with the boots.

Manfred Rommel donated one of his father's visor hats to the museum to be displayed with the boots.

                Mystery solved! Cheers, Bill Huber

                  Rommel medals

I thought his baton was at the panzer museum in M******252;nster? Obviously I was wrong based on the picture Mike posted here. Did they move it there in May from M******252;nster?

However my son and I were fortunate to visit the Rommel archives in Erlingen that Ross mentioned. It does not have regular hours open to the public. It is a matter of finding the caretaker and convincing him to allow you in. We were very lucky.

Here are just a few of the pictures I took there.

                        Rommel

As Ross mentioned, his gravesite is just outside and around the corner. I have pictures of his home and the monument at the site of his suicide also, but I won't bore you with those.

Does anyone know how many uniforms a Feldmarschall used to have? A dozen?

I know Bill Shea also has a greatcoat of Rommel's and I think he has a medal bar also.

                                Rommel

OK, as requested, a few more...

This is outside the gates of Rommels home with a plaque on the wall naming it's former and present occupants.
