    Opinions Please EKII Spange

    Hello Gentleman,

    I would appriciate any input on this spange, I have spent some time comparing it to the ones I have in my archival files as well as printed referece, but after seeking the pics of the EKI repos that were really razor sharp repos I would like some opinions on this piece. This looks like the L/12, 4 prong repo. But just thought I would post it.

          I am trying to narrow this piece down, is this the piece that surfaced in the mid 1980s as the four prong wonder that stung quite a few collectors?

                Seriously, thank you for pointing that out, my main focus was on the breasts....... I mean prongs. Sorry, but I could not resist.

                    Actually, while in most cases (on originals) the prongs are individually soldered, there are examples of good pieces with the bars attached as shown on Joe's clasp.

                        I don't have one, nor have I ever seen one, but Gordon has said that the type of attaching device with two bars folded over to create four prongs has been noted on original Spangen.

                          Meybauer used this type of prong on their EK2 Spange as did some other firms. One of the makers of the First pattern Spange - the better looking type with the fuller chest to the eagle, also used it. It is common on fakes, but was certainly used on originals.

                          Here is an L/13 Spange, obtained in the original LDO box with ticket still attached.

                            Thanks George and Gordon! It looks like the article on reproductions on the Members Only website needs to be corrected as it uses an EKII Spange with the crossbar type prongs as an example of a fake and even states that in the article.

                              I dug out the First Pattern Spange with this type of prong. Here it is. Unfortunately three of the ends are broken off, but the construction is clear to see.
