EAGLE ORDER 1st CLASS CASE QUESTION

    Hi Guys,
I have a question about the case's of an Eagle order 1st class. I have been offered a cased example, but instead of the more oft seen wording inside the case, this one read "Deutscher Adlerorder 1. Stufe". Is this the later model case? The medal is 900 marked and "21" for godet. Can anyone help clear this up?

    Hi Gerhard,

Your assuption is correct. The 1943 1st class equals the 1937 Grosskreuz.

        I am confused,
The medal itself is the 1st class 37, but is the 3rd class 43. The case has the above wording. Is that correct, and if so, which date medal is it?

For the 1. Class, Neckcross of the German Eagle Order following names were used from 1937 - 1945 for one and the same medal:

1937-1938: "Orden vom Deutschen Adler, Verdienstkreuz 1. Stufe"
1938-1943: "Verdienstkreuz 1. Stufe des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler"
          1943-1944: "Deutscher Adlerorden 1. Stufe"
          1944-1945: "Deutscher Adlerorden III. Klasse"

So the DAO is one from 1943-1944. The same medal is since 1944 renamed in "the 3rd class"...

          regards

Gerard, I appreciate your confusion. The 1st class 1937 neck cross (50mm and marked 900 on the ring) was renamed 3rd class 1943 (or 1944 as suggested by Koj) loop marked "900" and "21", fan marked "3".

The case for the 3rd class 1943 reads "Deutscher Adler Orden III Klasse. The case you have reads Deutscher Adler Orden 1. Stufe, which is odd.
The 1937 issue of the first class should read "Verdinstkreuz des Ordens vom Deutscher Adler Erste Stufe. The designation "Klasse" was used only on the 1943 cases. Either way, the 1943 Deutscher Adler Orden 1. Klasse was the same as the 1937 "Grosskreuz des Ordens vom Deutschenadler", (60mm and "900" on the ring). Is it possible for you to produce a scan of the case?

Hello Peter, just read what Koj wrote, I think is the only way to know the many changes the order had: neck cross was called that way those years, breast cross was called that other way, six or eight pointed star this other way, etc... Eagle Order had many changes and it´s not easy to have a whole view of every grade every period.

Anyway it would be very helpfull to see a photo of the case because it´s true... 1943 "Deutscher Adler Orden 1. Klasse" was the same as the 1939 "Grosskreuz des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler"... The measurements of the box will betray the one who is!

                  All best,

                  Pablo

Pablo, thanks for your comments. For the readers of this thread, I suppose it's apparent that there is a discrepancy in Koj's and my answer. The existence of a 1943-44 type is unknown to me, but I have an open mind. I would appreciate some elaboration on this type, if possible. Ron, any chance of an image?

Thanks for the scan Koj . Unfortunately this doesn't add anything to the discussion. Perhaps a link to the accurate forum will provide better results.
