    CHOLM shield for review

Here's one I'd like to get some opinions on. Yes, it's magnetic, but a bit strange with straight prongs on the back and no back plate.

      Hi George,
To me this very much like the Tombak type shield with the 2 pins.
So are you sure the shield is magnetic?
If the shield is magnetic that this would probably be the first one for me.
However if t turns out that the shield is indeed non-magnetic than to me it appears that someone replaced the 2 pins to made it look like the official awarded shield.

Frome these pictures I like the shield but as Pascal said some parts without finish reveals the color of the base metal, and it seems tomback.

Thanks for replying! Did they ever use a back plate that had the same shape as the front side? In searching through the previous threads, it seems the back plate had a circular shape to the bottom and not the pointed end like the shield here.

Not sure how to test that front side is magnetic without it picking up the steel of the back plate if that was steel?

              Hi George,
There are certainly examples known of Cholm shields with a backplate the same shape as the shield itself.

Here is an example of such a shield.

                Hi George,

As the others have said, this one is the same type as the 2-pin Cholms, it has all the same little flaws on it. As you know, the 2-pin cholms are controversial in that we aren't sure if they were wartime made for wear or if they were made for album covers or whatever. Some also think they are all just postwar. I like the level of detail on yours, and the patina.....but I continue to believe these are all postwar shields IMO.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

I'm not a fan of these 2 prong type shields either and also think they are all post war.

                  Regards,

Tom and all, thanks for the timely responses. I posted this for a friend who wanted to make sure it was ok before it was put up for sale. I did have it at the SOS for him, but didn't want to sell it as original until I knew for sure as I had some doubts.

Tom, you're right about it matching up with a 2 pronger, but thought it might've had a chance still with 3 prongs on it, patina, and nice details.
