The only way really to back up the clam that the Lappland (or even Balken Shields) is real is to see if the soldier has an entry in his Soldbuch. Many troops even in POW camps where still awarded and documented recieving the shield.

The upper of your two shields in post 12 is a copy. The lower of the two is an original.
The helmet fake quality did improve with time and now may be found made in magnetic metal as well as with wing veins. What the fakers have not improved upon though is the quality of the Black sea “surface”. That may be seen in the picture below. Shield A shows the faked sea finish , shield B – original. IMO

      To Fisherman

From what I could see on your picture, your shield is identical to A. But take a closer look if you have the shield, I may be mistaken.

I do not agree with the statement which Filip made that the first shield which Jan posted is a fake shield.
I know that at some point on the Russian forums this type of shield was declared a fake shield. As I have no knowledge of the Russian language I couldn’t find out the reason for this or if there was any proof for this .

When holding this type of shield everything just screams out original. I am convinced that the well known “helmet fake” is based on the first shield which is posted by Jan.

To make matters I little clearer I will post the two shields next to each other.

Only recently a grouping of Oberleutnant Horst Quednau was sold by Detlev Niemann.
As you can see this fairly big grouping came with a staggering 5 Krim shields!!!!

At least one of the 5 shields is as of the same type as the discussed type. To me another reason why this is an absolutely original shield.

So do I Joe.....I didn't think the shield that started this thread was this type.

I'd like to see a better scan of the shield.

The Lappland was only awarded post-capitulation, some rare cases exist of documents being back dated to 1 or 4 may '45 but most were awarded july\august 45 and fewer in sept and october. Forget the notion of 'POW' camps as that wasn't the case in Norway. They were 'reservations' administered to a greater or lesser degree by the Germans themselves. It was that great degree of autonomy that enabled the wehrmacht to continue functioning administratively for months after the end and why decorations continued to be awarded, not just the Lappland shield but the EK, KVK and WB.
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

                    Krim compare

These were my concerns regarding the Krim compared to my example, got to say I still don't like this shield.

Hi Tim......Agreed but without any real conclusion. The shield I put up as a comparison I think shows the difference between the two. Of course I'd still like to see a decent scan of the Krim that started this thread.
