I am going with my gut on this one- I believe this is the most incredible fake I have seen yet of this piece, which would fool 99% of collectors. There are a few characteristics this piece possesses that are atypical of what I expect to see in genuine examples (and I have owned 3).

I'm no expert on Cholms but period shields were either steel or zinc...this one looks hot of the press. What type of metal do you think it is????

Is there anything besides the color and backing that sends up the red flags? Reason I ask is both those faults can be corrected fairly easily. Like you said the detailing is incredible.WR Jim

                        Jim,

There a couple of things that I cannot divulge that I do not like about this shield. I hate being vague like this but this piece is downright scary. At no point did I ever go "Wow!! Nice shield, but now that I look at it there's . . . " as this piece raised red flags from the get-go.

If I was looking for a Cholm shield and someone would offer this one to me, I would pass on this one. Just my gut-feeling.....

I can’t see anything wrong with this shield and to me it looks like an original example of the zinc type with the 4 prongs.

                                Dear KBH,
I have not handled your shield personally so I can only base my opinion on your pictures. To me this shield looks exactly the same as other original zinc Cholm shields with four prongs which I have seen before, have handled and have on file.

I don’t know if the shield you’re showing is in fact yours but I know that this shield was sold by a very respectable German dealer not so long ago.

As there are so many collectors not liking this shield I am sure a few can post a scan of an original zinc Cholm shield with 4 prongs so we can compare the shields.
