Whats the tell tale signs Alex....as it is a very convincing looking piece....
Is it the solid copper rivets, the stippled look to the backplate or something else??

Nigel, to me the wreath shows too little details, the starburst color doesn’t look like the correct S&L tone but rather identical to modern fake pieces. The stippled backplate is also something I have not seen on a S&L DKiG.
It might be different in person, but to me this DKiG just looks wrong for a S&L German Cross. „Modern“ made S&L DK‘s just look nicer.
I believe this fake is made by the same people who make the modern „S&L - looking“ badges using hardware that try’s to imitate late S&L hardware.
You could well be right there Alex!!
Many of the recent fakes are based on S&L 's designs, and the differences between modern made S&L and modern made fakes are getting less easy to see!!

Guys, to be honest if this is a fake, then it is the "best" I have ever seen. Even in person this piece looks very nice, the hardware seems totally convincing, no ugly soldering under the catch.... to be honest this is scary.
I wouldn't write it off just yet Andrew.....
We'll try and compare with known later S&L pieces and see if any of the details that worried Alex show up on those............
If they haven't been seen before then...........

I am not a big fan of it either for all the reasons mentioned. As soon as you see it you sense something wrong. Gut feeling but all the points are relevant.
