57er - Bundeswehr Tunic Reference Thread

    Hello all,

Rüdiger made an excellent suggestion today to make a reference thread dedicated to 57er related, BW tunics. As there is a specific Bundeswehr subforum where these items would normally shared, we need to specify what to show here and what not to show there. So, to help maintain consistency with our particular function here on the WAF, IMO, the tunics should fall under the following guidelines.

Generally speaking, the tunics should in some way be linked directly to 57er's. In other words even an early tunic from the 50's or early 60's that is not directly linked to 57er's would not be appropriate. That would be an item for this forum - Bundesrepublik Deutschland, 1949-Present.

The tunics that would be appropriate for our subforum would have at least one of the following characteristics:

    1. Bear a 57er medal bar as originally worn by a vet.
    2. Bear full size 57er medals as originally worn by a vet. (Now, that would be rare!)
    3. Be a tunic of a high rank (Oberst or higher preferably) made before 1965 as these tunics would likely have been worn by a WWII veteran.
    4. Have some direct link ie. be attributed, named or have some direct provenance to a WWII vet who went on to serve in the Bundeswehr.
    5. Be a period photograph of a tunic that meets one of the above.
    6. A 1965 or earlier made tunic converted (bars and/or medals added) to complete a veteran display.

This thread will be pinned in our Links to Comparison and Reference Threads section for easy reference.

All that being said, bring on your prize tunics gents! This oughta be good!

    Many thanks Mike

The guidelines are perfect and so we maybe can list up a few very nice looking tunics and how to date them by period.

So i´ll begin with one tunic....don´t want to shoot all my powder at the beginning

Here we have a mid 60s Fregattenkapitän (Oberstleutnant rank in Heer and LW) tunic made by KKB (Kleiderkasse Bundeswehr). So no private purchased one. I showed this one in the BW section as well longer ago and the guys told me that KKB labeled tunics are made till the mid 60s.....after then they were labeled with "KKBw".
This one has the wide piston rings that measure 9mm and 16mm and are just the same as the ones on wartime tunics and that too fits to the mid 60s timeframe of the tunic. Material is not this cheap celleon but better material (Just don´t know how to name it)
Navy tunics are a little bit harder to judge as the colour and style is the same in all periods from the first day on. I still have the pair of matching trousers but these are not on the pic.

The visor is a well worn one and made by "Isko". Isko made visors too in the wartime and so he knew how to make a great visor. Sweatband is made of leather, a feature that is not very often to find and IMO tightens the mid 60s production.

I made a display to show how my RK winner Georg Pinkepank would have looked when going to parade.

    Hope you enjoy.

heres one of my favourite jackets direct from an estate in 2001 fallschirmjager verteran Hellmut Kerutt. i was lucky enough to get his early 62 dated cap (not shown) and his 70s jacket (full oberst) at the time i didn't get his ribbon bar but thanks to a few mates his second (never used) bar is arriving from australia hopefully very soon

This is a great thread and correct guidelines set by Mike. Always admired Rudiger's uniform in his pictures. So, it is good that he shows it now. What a centre piece Rudiger. And can't wait to see Tom's collection. I can see this thread getting bigger.
                Regards

Hooray, Tom is finally an A-member and able to post pics

Great tunics, Tom. I really like them.

I am not a FJ collector so please let me know more about Kerrut. Is that a special, high awarded guy or "only" (sorry) a para vet ? Don´t want to sound harsh....guys

The visor on the second tunic is IMO earlier than the tunic, or??

Do you display every tunic on a mannequin or is there one that you dress up for the pics?? I am only asking because of the needed space

Looking for ward to see more from you......later i´ll post another one to fill the thread a little bit

So let´s go on with another attributed tunic

No RK or DK winner, no one with a big name but i love my Brigadegeneral H. Miltzow

He was one of the very less guys (1 of 53 Reichswehr officers) who served in 3 armys - Reichswehr-Wehrmacht-Bundeswehr.

                            born: 05.04.1910
                            joined the Reichswehr in 1930 - 1.Preussische Kraftfahrabtlg.Königsberg
                            03.01.39 Commander 4.Pz.Abw.Abtlg.11 Magdeburg
Ia (general staff,Operational officer) 719.Infanteriedivision 10.10.44-20.04.45 rank Oberstleutnant
                            Commander Panzerbatallion 143 01.07.56 - 28.02.58 rank Oberstleutnant
                            Commander Panzerbrigade 18 (Neumünster-Boostedt (my hometown )) 01.07.61 - 31.03.64
                            promoted to Brigadegeneral 17.03.65
                            retired 31.03.68

Judging by the arm patch i think his last unit was the Panzergrenadierbrigade 17 - Hamburg.

                            Awards:

                            EK I
                            EK II
                            KvK I
                            KvK II
                            BWB
                            East medal
                            4 years service
                            Romania "Kreuzzug gegen den Kommunismus"
Romania Order of the crown - officers cross

And now to the uniform which is complete except the visor.
A so called "Gesellschaftsanzug" that normally should be used for special events like dinner with politics and so on. But it was also allowed to wear the jacket to the "Ausgehanzug" ... so not for daily service.
These uniforms had to be made by a private taylor, so there´ll be no KKB or KKBw label in it. Glad that i could get that set with the trouser, shirt and tie.
The Gesellschaftsanzug was introduced in 1962 and in this style worn till 1973 then a new one was introduced.
I would say that this one is made around 1965 when Miltzow was promoted to Brigadegeneral.

So now let´s the pics speak....a few more to come
Maybe Tom knows more to say or o forgot something.....
