BUT - even if it is repainted, it is still a very nice one !!! So don't worry about that
Hi Patryk, no worries at all, i'd just like to know, if its repainted, then i'd guess, its the whole core thats been painted again, and not just one or two small ares???
Is this makers crosses well known for losing their paint?? Seems a strange thing to repaint the core, at least to me!!!

i suppose the thing to take into concideration is thats its over 100 years old and has gone though half or so of ww1 all of ww2 and then post war thats a lot even if its been in a draw all that time its going to get a hell of a lot of wear so a repaint might be in order

Very True Tom!! It would be nice to know when it was repainted and by who??
If its recently by a collector, then that not great But if it was repainetd by the vet, possibly when the Spange and new ribbon were added, then thats good by me!!

Have'nt had much response so far in the Imperial section, but Trev thinks it could well be repainted, so with both Trev and Patryk thinking the same, thats good enough for me!!!

i think i can explain the possble replaced ribbon:
              he servered ww1 got ek2
then servered ww2 got another ek2 which meant a ribbon with spange on his tunic which if he removed from tunic would have 3 nice big holes in it hence why the new ribbon and he added the spange like it is so no more holes (maybe)

              best regards
              tom
              ps pure speculation really

I never was into Imperial EK's, but I am also not keen on the paint.
                Sorry.

Combo's always make me nervous because it happend often that items got mixed to be able the unsellable items also.
It is also like cases, ribbons loops and so on.
That is why I only collect them with provenance, but that is maybe also the reson why I don't have such a clasp.
I never saw one in a veterans group.

                But I like the clasp

It could also be that the wearer repainted his old cross when he upgraded it with the clasp for veterean meetings!
                We will probably never know.

                  Hi Luud!
No problem, i would have rather it been all original, but it is'nt, just one of those things!!!

Nigel, I think that this cross might be repainted by a vet.

I tell you why I think so.

If you look closely at the obverse, you will se the same unpainted leftover on a left arm, as on reverse arms. BUT - on the obverse, that leftover area has slighty melt with the painted area by a rust (or dirt? from this pic it looks like a light rust). It means that repaint has been made quite long time ago.

Anyway that cross with spange looks just brilliant

                      Hi Nigel,

It's a good looking cross and a nice set with repeat spange.

Is there anything to suggest that the cross was disassembled at some time? I ask because repainting a core with seemingly thick paint without getting ANY paint on the frames is a pretty tough task. Not impossible, but certainly not easy. I don't see any paint on the frames at all and with horizontal paint strokes I don't see how it's possible. Resoldering after painting might have done some damage to the painted surface. Perhaps that what Patryk is pointing to in post 24. I'm no expert in these matters, so I'm spit balling here. It's a mystery for sure. Best wishes in solving the puzzle.

thanks for all the comments guys!!
@Patryk, you have eagle eyes my friend, and a great knowledge of Imperial EK's!!!
@Mike, you are right, there seems to be no paint at all on the frame?? And yet there is no sign that the cross has been opened and resoldered, it looks perfect??
If, as Patryk suggested, it was repainted by a vet, i dont think he would have gone to the trouble of taking the cross apart?? Must be a neat painter with a steady hand!!
