Interesting 57 grouping w/ some TR awards too!

I just acquired this grouping which belonged to one man. Although I was told by the seller that the group belonged to the author of the accompanying book (he couldn't read German, I do), I am sure that the awards actually belonged to his brother (who is in the book too).

The book was privately published by a publisher who makes books for families which record their personal geneologies. The author of this book, an Oberst Wolf Joachim von Schweinitz (DKiG), published this edition on his 91st birthday in 1998. It covers 800 years of his families service to Christianity and Country. I also give an autobiography of both his and his brothers service both pre war, during the war, and post war. It ends with information on each current, living, family member up until that date.

There is a picture in this book of Oberst Georg v. Schweinitz while serving at the Pentagon wearing the medal bars pictured.

Who these awards, the book, etc., were given to, and how they arrived at my table are still yet a mystery, BUT!,............one I will resolve with some research.

    Regards,

    Chuck

Chuck, neat set! I noticed the wearer of these awards had two ribbon bars made that are the same! If you can show some shots of the guy in uniform wearing ribbon bar/medals, that would be great.

Two bars are not exacrly the same. Top one has extra ribbon in the first row.

The bars are the same. One is in one piece construction and the other in single sets. The one single bar with the white enameled maltese cross is unknown to me and I don't know how it fits in. Perhaps someone out there knows what it is?

Georg v. Schweinitz was an Officer in A.R. 4, attached to a Panzer Division. He saw service in a number of different capacities during the war after being wounded on the Russian Front but wound up back in his old unit. He was wounded again just at the wars end and had his entire arm and shoulder in a cast when captured by the Russians. He wound up in American custody a bit later and then wound up in the British zone of occupation where he worked with them as well.

What interests me is why he has both the silver panzer badge and a general assault badge. A general assault badge I fully understand being an artilleryman. The panzer badge is interesting though. Maybe it was kind of like my relative who had the IAB first, and then the PAB when he became a tanker in 43.

The white cross is the Johanniter Order. Look in the Imperial section as it was more commonly encountered then. This order still exists in Germany as well as other countries. In english it is the Order of St. John.

This is a very interesting group and I think this is the latest military grouping I have seen with this order. Nice find!

Funny how our collections grow. I find it interesting to go back to my old posts.

                    Hello

A great set, and made even better because you have the full history behind the awards and the man who earned them.

Now that really is history and what this hobby is about. Thanks for showing them.

                    Regards
                    David
