Solomons Islands Japanese helmet and ammo

These things came back from a vet who fought in the Solomons of course its hearsay so I would like to know if the Japanese characters could pinpoint the helmet to Guadalcanal or Bougainville . Its a small helmet with what looks like grey dots to the top area ? the ammo is all dated 1942 and I should imagine its Garrand ammo all inert the bullets have been placed on fired rounds. Thank you Rob

Its a Japanese Imperial Army helmet model 1932. Can't help with the inscription but I'm assuming its an initial and unit number of roll number. The ammunition is indeed US 30 calibre marks DEN 42 for Denver Ordnance Plant

That is the name of the soldier, Higuchi, spelt in the angular syllabry called katakana.

          ヒグチ ㊀
          Higuchi ①

          • In kanji, Higuchi is 樋口.

Japanese have FOUR ways to write:
              kanji 漢字

              hiragana ひらがな
              katakana カタカナ
romaji "rome letters" (the Jesuits were from Rome; ergo "roma-ji")

Here's an example using the same word "Yamamoto" :
              Kanji: 山本
              Hiragana: やまもと
              Katakana: ヤマモト
              Romaji: Yamamoto

Katakana is an angular modification of kanji; hiragana is a fluid modification of kanji.

For example, the hiragana "wa" わ is a modification of 和 "wa/peace". Here's a nice chart that shows from whence come hiragana:

              Cheers,

Would have been useful if the Japanese had settled on Romaji ! Rob
