over the weekend I was able to borrow and scan some really cool photos of some army units on tinian and siapan with some captured jap flags. Can anyone read any of the writing?

...interesting captured flag photo
Originally posted by dan hthis photos says forward observer party with captured jap banner
Thanks for posting some interesting captured Japanese flag photos. The flag having the three circles with a cog-wheel looks like maybe some kind of a Tokyo Factory/Arsenal Engineering detachment flag? If you get the konji lettering translated do let me know what it turns out to be? Also always interested in seeing other captured flag photos, especially of flags with fringed edges - see example of the type of flag of collecting interest to me, as shown below.

sigpic

dan h,
The large dark kanji characters, one in each corner of the signed flag, translate to "External [Good] Fortunes of War" which is a common slogan found on a majority of the signed flags that I see.
As you noted, the signed flag is being held upside down or side ways in the photos.
The blue colored flag with the fringes on the sides has katakana that translate to "Tinian." (I can not make out the rest of the kanji, but suspect it's for an association of some type.)
Hope this helps and thanks for sharing the photos with us on the forum.
Eric
