Another Early Copper Type 95 NCO Sword

Nice things seem to come in pairs for me. Yesterday this nice early copper NCO came in. The sword is in about as nice condition as as the other copper type 95 that came in a few weeks back ("Lucky" serial number 13). This new sword is also a low number with matching number 71.

The sword was posted about a year ago on another forum. At that time the leather sarute was still attached at one end. When it came in yesterday the sarute was broken off and in a plastic bag. The owner had been keeping the sword it in a knit Cabelas gun sock. Going in and out of that gun sock must have been the death of the sarute. Oh well at least he still had it.

This one is another keeper for me.

What kind of Sarute is it? Rope or wire?

          Hi Oldhonda,
It's leather. I'll get some shots of it later.

          Hi Bruce,
Thanks! I think you may have seen #71 before.

          Here's serial number 13 and 71 together.

                Jim,
Both are killer swords, I am jealous, my lowest numbered one is 563, I though that was a low number
                Seriously, killer, unupgradable swords!!!:

                  Hi Bob,
                  Thanks!

Your sword, serial #563, should still have the early U shaped brass plug at the end of the scabbard. I think that they changed to the strait style plug sometime after serial 650 or so. The swords with the early U shaped plugs are all extra rare in my mind.

I would love to see some pictures of your sword.

Some fun stats about copper Type 95s (Rough information gleaned from Dawson's book and from sword guru Pat Lundy).

                  1. Less than 80 recorded examples still in existence.
                  2. 16 (17 with your sword) examples under serial #1000
                  3. 5 examples under serial #100
                  4. 1 example under serial #10

                    Ho Oldhonda,
Here are the shots of the leather Sarute. A real shame it's detached.

I used Gorilla Glue on a broken leather rank tassel. Seems to be holding. Still have to be gentle as the leather is still fragile, though.

Thanks J.M.C. Those close-up views really show the degree of quality and attention to detail.

                          Hi Bruce,
I don’t like to mess with things so I will just leave it as is. It still has its shape so it’s easy to slip it over the end for display.

                            Hi Jim!
I wish I could tell you but that one has a combat cover, I love that sword! I will dig them out, they are buried and get some pics when I can.
                            Thanks for the eye candy!

                              Hi Bob,
Tough enough to find a NCO sword in a combat cover, really rare to have a copper Type 95 with one. I can only imagine how the leather cover and brass plug have "merged" together over the years.

I would love to see it when you get a chance. Talk about eye candy!
