        Hi Steve-
Pictures #2 and #3 did not post. From what you describe, the price seems to be at the market. That is based on your description and pictures #1.
        Best regards,
        Bob

                Hi Steve!

I cannot date the gun ... but I can date the brand to between 1871~1873; the gun is likely older -- could be mid-Edo .... could be older.

                1. Letters in orange lacquer:
                第四百十一号
                Dai yonhyaku juu-ichi gou
                No. 411
Dai means "number" and "gou" is the counter - don't ask, it is complicated. In between is the actual number "four-hundred ten-and-one"

                2. Brand on both sides:

                宇都宮縣
                Utsunomiya-ken
                Utsunomiya Prefecture

The old pre-1946 kanji for prefecture is used; today it is written as 県

                3. Kamon:
A rising-sun fan within an octagon.

I cannot find this on google-image ... the closest I get is "a rising-sun fan within a circle."
                日の丸扇 家紋
It might be of the Satake clan, their kamon is the rising sun fan within a circle; and, they have some sort of tie to Utsunomiya Castle, but my Japanese isn't good enough to get a good understanding. If you do a word-search for 宇都宮 (Utsunomiya), you'll find the one citation I've mentioned:
                https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%BD...AB%B9%E6%B0%8F

The Utsunomiya clan used the three comma design, so I doubt the gun is tied directly to the former clan:
                https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%AE...AE%AE%E6%B0%8F

                =============

The reason I can say the brand dates between 1871 ~ 1873 is what I found
                in Japanese Wiki:
                https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%AE...AE%AE%E7%9C%8C

                1871 (Meiji 4 years)
July 14 - According to the "Hai-han Chi-ken" [the enforced establishment of prefectures in place of feudal domains (廃藩置県; Hai-han Chi-ken) in July 14, 1871] Utsunomiya clan domain will be abolished become Utsunomiya prefecture.
November 14 - Utsunomiya, Odawara, Kuroba, Karasuyama, and Motegi prefectures are integrated by the first prefecture reorganization, Utsunomiya re-established in the northern area of Shimono-ken. The prefectural government is set up in Umeagaoka, Utsunomiya, Kawachi-gun. In addition, the former Kitsuregawa clan region of Nikko prefecture was also incorporated.

1873 (Meiji 6) June 15 - Merger with Tochigi prefecture [that's were it is today]. Abolished Utsunomiya prefecture the same day.
So that brand could only have been used between 14 July 1871~15 June 1873.

Found out about the Utsuomiya clan in English:
                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utsunomiya_Domain

                Cheers,
                --Guy
