    Hi Bill,

    Regarding your comment about orientation, kanji on sword tangs are read from top to bottom as the sword is held upright with the tip uppermost so that's the way to photograph them.

          According to Mr. Ohmura's gunto site, that is the manufacturer's number. In this case:

          テ 七一
          Te - 71
