Hello All,an elderly friend is moving away after losing his Japanese wife.He decided to sell his house and put together some items he has never shown me before in a box for me to have. This is one of them.A flag that belonged to his uncle which purportedly came from Luzon. It is in very bad condition and terribly brittle so I thought I would carefully unfold it and take some photographs to share before it goes to time. at least the photos will be around for study purposes. There are some machine sewn tabs which were most likely added by the vet to hang the flag on the wall.Perhaps our Kanji Gurus will find something interesting hidden within.

I cannot make out the name of the gifter.
忠誠
Chūsei
Loyalty
祈武運長久
Ki Buun Choukyuu
Wishes for Good Fortune in Battle
The gifter's name looks something like this .... but I cannot make out the first kanji [looks similar to "shiba" to me] -- and I'm missing the lead kanji in his given name.
芝氷?次郎
Shibakori ...~jirou
[That CANNOT be right!]
However, he has a court rank:
従七位勲五等
Jushichii Kun Go Tō
Junior Seventh Rank [court rank]; 5th Order of Merit
The other smaller kanji in the opposite corner says
七生報國
Shichisei Hōkoku
Seven Lives For the Country.
Original saying attributed to Kusunoki Masashige, a 14th century samurai who fought for Emperor Go Daigo to take power from the Kamakura shogunate.

It has a great history as told here and if your expectation is a pile of dust in a few years it's more of a liability than an asset at this point.
Just my two cents. Thanks for sharing this interesting flag!
