    Disintegrating Flag

Hello All,an elderly friend is moving away after losing his Japanese wife.He decided to sell his house and put together some items he has never shown me before in a box for me to have. This is one of them.A flag that belonged to his uncle which purportedly came from Luzon. It is in very bad condition and terribly brittle so I thought I would carefully unfold it and take some photographs to share before it goes to time. at least the photos will be around for study purposes. There are some machine sewn tabs which were most likely added by the vet to hang the flag on the wall.Perhaps our Kanji Gurus will find something interesting hidden within.

                  Hi Geoff,
This one looks like a candidate for a glass picture frame!
                  Nice pick up though!

Interesting piece Geoff. Appears non-standard in dimension. Just the photo or is it wider than most we see?

Can you get the name of the uncle and perhaps some of his service details. I'm sure Nick or Guy will be able to assist and it would be great to have a match.

                    Regards,
                    Stu

I cannot make out the name of the gifter.

                      忠誠
                      Chūsei
                      Loyalty

                      祈武運長久
                      Ki Buun Choukyuu
Wishes for Good Fortune in Battle

The gifter's name looks something like this .... but I cannot make out the first kanji [looks similar to "shiba" to me] -- and I'm missing the lead kanji in his given name.
                      氷?次郎
                      Shibakori ...~jirou
                      [That CANNOT be right!]

However, he has a court rank:
                      従七位勲五等
                      Jushichii Kun Go Tō
Junior Seventh Rank [court rank]; 5th Order of Merit

The other smaller kanji in the opposite corner says
                      七生報國
                      Shichisei Hōkoku
                      Seven Lives For the Country.
Original saying attributed to Kusunoki Masashige, a 14th century samurai who fought for Emperor Go Daigo to take power from the Kamakura shogunate.

I love the look of this flag, and, as Ern said, it would look great if it was framed exactly as it is now.

                        Regards

Nick, are you in the cavalry? You keep saving the day just in the NICK of time!

It doesn't have to be Geoff (he said with visions of Pre-Columbian cloth in mind). If you care to that is (none of my business really), contact a local museum that deals with textiles and show it to them. They will tell you what needs to be done. If it's cost prohibitive there must be a war museum that would be happy to take it on, you'd get a tax deduction.

It has a great history as told here and if your expectation is a pile of dust in a few years it's more of a liability than an asset at this point.

Just my two cents. Thanks for sharing this interesting flag!
