You could photocopy the letter and envelope and mail it to the address Nick supplied. The US Postal Service will accept a foreign language adress as long as you write the country in English:

    戸根照夫
    大阪府大阪市
    住吉区万代4-18-17
    JAPAN

I looked up the now required zip code for that address and added it to the English address, so best to use that one.

Guy - that is a good idea, thank you.

          I will do so.

I was fortunate to get to return a GI-signed bring-back flag to the son of one of its signers earlier this year. Really nice experience.

Do you guys think I should attempt to confirm that the brother is still living?

Or, just do it, and write "and family" in the address, in hopes that it reaches someone in his family?

Also, and sorry for my ignorance, do I need someone to translate the note I include with it; or, write it in English? I don't want to be a burden.

          Thank you,

          C

A short note in English will suffice. The family will be overjoyed to receive the copy of the original letter ... especially if the brother is still living. Also, it will be easy enough to find someone in Osaka to translate your note from English to Japanese.

Here's the address and zip as supplied earlier by Nick.

I will do just that - thank you Guy, Nick, and everybody that helped me with this.

I will come back to the forum with updates as appropriate.

If you would like I have a student who is teaching in Osaka at the moment who can call ahead to ensure the address is still valid. Also, Akira -the moderator on the Photographs forum I am sure would be glad to help.

I would be indebted. Once you confirm, I will put the package together. Thank you very much.

It looks like this thread has evolved some since the initial post, but I thought I would include the unit information for those interested:
                    U 86 Wotje, Marshall Islands
U 126 106 Air Depot 第百六航空廠 Changed to:
U 126 South East Area Air Depot, 2 Branch Depot 南東方面航空廠第二支廠
                    U 58 Branch Workshop 分工場

It is a small world with collectibles it seems: That Roi Namur grouping up for sale a few weeks' back had paperwork from the same depot.

Thanks for the help George, missed you at SOS this year.

Hopefully, with McCulloh's help, we can confirm the family address is still good, and can get copies of everything to them.

Any sense - based on unit / detatchment - what this soldier would have done (role)?

I always appreciate your knowledge George.

Must have been a plane mechanic, which also explains the tag from the plane part. The more important question is his fate when you contact the family. Did the GIs just ransack a depot and found these in some drawer or was he killed in combat?

Yes, the sailor's fate is a huge question that might never be answered, at least by us. It should be noted that Wotje was one of the bypassed garrisons during the war. There was a fairly large population of IJN personnel on the atoll before the 1944 Allied invasion -- over 2,000. When the Americans came back to accept the garrison's surrender, less than a quarter of the IJN personnel were still alive (deaths were attributed to illness, malnutrition, bombardment). 497 naval personnel did survive though, and assuming that the sailor wasn't transferred last minute to another atoll before the invasion, there is a possibility that the family might already have information regarding their relative. Speculation of course.

Very interesting info Tom - thank you, as always!

As an update, I've PM'd Akira, asking for his help in verifying family at the address we have. I will let the group know as soon as I learn anything, one way or the other.
