Help with Japanese paper grouping

You could photocopy the letter and envelope and mail it to the address Nick supplied. The US Postal Service will accept a foreign language adress as long as you write the country in English:

Or, just do it, and write "and family" in the address, in hopes that it reaches someone in his family?

Also, and sorry for my ignorance, do I need someone to translate the note I include with it; or, write it in English? I don't want to be a burden.

A short note in English will suffice. The family will be overjoyed to receive the copy of the original letter ... especially if the brother is still living. Also, it will be easy enough to find someone in Osaka to translate your note from English to Japanese.

It is a small world with collectibles it seems: That Roi Namur grouping up for sale a few weeks' back had paperwork from the same depot.

Hopefully, with McCulloh's help, we can confirm the family address is still good, and can get copies of everything to them.

Any sense - based on unit / detatchment - what this soldier would have done (role)?

Must have been a plane mechanic, which also explains the tag from the plane part. The more important question is his fate when you contact the family. Did the GIs just ransack a depot and found these in some drawer or was he killed in combat?

Yes, the sailor's fate is a huge question that might never be answered, at least by us. It should be noted that Wotje was one of the bypassed garrisons during the war. There was a fairly large population of IJN personnel on the atoll before the 1944 Allied invasion -- over 2,000. When the Americans came back to accept the garrison's surrender, less than a quarter of the IJN personnel were still alive (deaths were attributed to illness, malnutrition, bombardment). 497 naval personnel did survive though, and assuming that the sailor wasn't transferred last minute to another atoll before the invasion, there is a possibility that the family might already have information regarding their relative. Speculation of course.
