Ahh those japanese boxes , we find them often and never know what they are .. Any help is appreciated on this one guys . Nice heavy construction well made box . So i am guessing early war .

Hi John,

It's a wooden box that contain a vertical rudder for early torpedo.

Translation：　（From left to right)

廠工軍海呉　(Kure Kaigun Koujyou) - Kure Navy Factory

號一八一二第呉 (Kure Dai Ni Ichi Hachi Ichi Gou) - Kure No. 2181

造製部雷水　（Suiraibu Seizou) - Manufactured by Torpedo department

三年式縦舵機 (San Nen Siki Shoudaki) - Type 1914 vertical rudder <Photo 3>

It's from the Kure Naval Arsenal 呉海軍工廠 and it's something to do with a sea mine 水雷.

edit: Taka works faster than me.

Anyway, as long as I'm posting (Post #1000 for me!), I learned something new; the kanji for "sea mine" or "torpedo" is 水雷

Ain't that the truth!!!! I got as far as Kure Kaigun Kojyo when I noticed Taka's response!

I suppose during daylight hours in Japan, we ought to just sit back, relax with a nice cup of coffee, and let Taka do the hard stuff! [...well, to us it's hard.]

In this case 改 means modify.

Underneath 改 is N1K2-J. It was one of the best fighters that used by the IJN.

紫電改 (Shiden Kai) - Purple Lightening Mod.

Taka is part of my first name. 隆 (タカ).

Coincidently, a 60's Japanses comic was titled 紫電改のタカ Shidenkai no Taka. (の - 's)

In this case Taka is 鷹.
