When I squint my eyes hard enough ... it looks like
that is used to write "Nagoya" 古屋

I wonder if that is correct?

          Hi Brenig,

I believe the smith name is Hiromitsu. Still working on the stamp.

          Regards,
          Stu

That stamp does indeed look like the Nagoya Arsenal inspection stamp although my eyes are not what they once were so I can't be sure. I doubt it would be found on gendaito.

            Stu

Here is a photo of one on an NCO sword. For those not familiar with the stamp it's the middle one of the three. The others being Gifu to the left and Kokura to the right.

What do you guys think? A match?

              Regards,
              Stu

Using Stu's image overlaid and below Brenig's tang stamp, here's what I see:

Yeah, I think so. I rotated the original image 360ยบ and couldn't "force" a Seki or Showa stamp into the same "footprint."

According to R. Fuller and R. Gregory (Swordsmiths of Japan from 1926 to 1945) it is "very small unidentified stamp", fairly common.

However, I have met also with the interpretation that it is a Nagoya Arsenal stamp (http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/viewt...&sd=a&start=30).

                        You can choose ...
