You should tell your wife that TV, computers, movies, and cars are "money down the drain". I admit they are somewhat useful in life, but they all share something in common: they are all depreciating assets. They lose most of their value in 3 years! They just get cheaper and cheaper and new technology comes out....anyways that's why I hate the stuff.
Antiques won't betray you if you shop smart. If you play smart, you can resell your antiques at anytime to get your money back, and usually make a buck. I'm in my early 20's and trying to pay for law school, but to fund my antiquing, I buy from auctions and estate sales when ever I find militaria and resell it somewhere else. There's always someone who is looking for something you find, and you can make a few bucks to pay for your hobby.
I understand your wife's feelings though because my Japanese girlfriend HATES this hobby of mine. Besides asking for translation assitance with old grammar she can't read, she and her family think I'm nuts and some kind of "border-line" Japanese nationalist extremist (except I'm not Japanese) because I like the Japanese military stuff.
