          Hi,

It is a nice little tanto. The sig is weak but It appears to be signed Munekuni saku and is late Edo period. I think a nice straight WWI 1911 45 is worth a couple grand. If so I would trade it fast before the guy changes his mind!

          Hope this helps,

The Signature Is Morikuni And Appears To Be The Work Of A Smith From Kaga Province Circa Early 16th Century. The Form Of Tanto With The Thick Spine Is Called "yoridoshi" Or Armor Piercer. This Form Of Dagger Was Common During This Period Of Continual Warfare. The Rough Grain And Dark Color Of The Steel Would Lead Me To Believe This Is A Kaga Blade. These Are Characteristics Of The Steel And Forging Techniques From This Area Of Northern Honshu.
The Mounting Is Likely Mid 19th Century And Appears To Be Middle Quality Fittings.

Nice tanto, VE45. I'm a sucker for both Japanese blades AND 1911s, so it would be a hard choice for me!

Nice tanto, but I would not put too much value to it due to general condition (multiple kitaeware, meaning laminate separation), size of the blade and the obscurity of the smith. As for trade potential, depends on the 1911 variation and it's value though.

BTW, Kaga is not northern Honshu, it is more central facing the Japan sea.
