I find Japanese swords locally from time to time. But... none of the Japanese sword collectors ever tell me the truth about a sword.

It's always: "It's a common war time sword made of captured Chinese rail road steel" and "not worth much, maybe a few hundred dollars."

These are the same folks that don't place price tags on their items at shows!!

I give it to a friend to sell for me... and it's worth a $1000, and over 150 years old?

What's the big mystery with you guys??

JUST A COMMENT FROM A GUY WHO SERIOUSLY COLLECTED JAPANESE SWORDS FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS. I WAS SO SERIOUS I EVEN LIVED IN JAPAN FOR A WHILE TO BE ABLE TO STUDY THE BEST STUFF. I NEVER CLAIMED TO BE AN EXPERT BUT CONSIDERED MYSELF IN THE TOP TWENTY YANKS WITH KNOWLEDGE. LAST TIME OVER, I GUESSED SIX OUT OF SEVEN SWORD MAKERS CORRECTLY ON THE FIRST TRY WITH A BLIND JUDGEMENT OF THE SWORDS WITH THE SIGNATURE COVERED. THE OTHER I GOT THE RIGHT SCHOOL AND ERA BUT THE WRONG SMITH.
HERE IS THE PROBLEM. IN THE MANY YEARS I COLLECTED, I WOULD TRY AND BE HONEST WITH GUYS ON THEIR SWORDS AND ASK THEM TO BE HONEST WITH ME AND GIVE ME RIGHT OF FIRST REFUSAL TO BUY THE SWORD. WANT TO GUESS HOW MANY GUYS HONERED THAT PROMISE IN 30+ YEARS? ZERO, NADA, NO ONE. IT TAKES A GREAT AMOUNT OF TIME AND EFFORT TO LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY APPRECIATE AND JUDGE JAPANESE SWORDS. THE PROBLEM IS, IF YOU HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE, IT INTIMIDATES PEOPLE. EXPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE DEALING WITH A COMMODITY THAT NECESSITATES LEARNING HOW TO READ ARCHAIC KANJI. THE RESULTS OF HELPING WERE ALWAYS USED BY THE OWNER TO USE MY NAME TO SELL THE SWORD ELSEWHERE AND ATTEMPT TO UP THE PRICE.
MAYBE, YOU HAVE RUN IN TO SOMEONE LIKE MYSELF WHO IS TIRED OF TAKING THEIR MANY YEARS OF HARD STUDY TO BE USED FOR NO GAIN TO THEMSELVES. THEIR ARE LIKELY LESS THAN 50 AMERICANS WHO I WOULD CONSIDER KNOWLEDGABLE ON ANTIQUE JAPANESE SWORDS. WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF KNOWLEDGE, YOU CAN CUT THAT FIGURE IN HALF. A DEALER WHO USED TO GET A LOT OF JAPANESE SWORDS WOULD NEVER OFFER ONE TO ME IN THE FEAR I WOULD CHEAT HIM. I SAW HIM SELL MANY SWORDS TO AN OVERSEAS BUYER FOR FAR LESS THAN THEY WERE WORTH, ONE TIME, OUT OF FRUSTRATION, HE BROUGHT AN OLD SWORD TO ME TO READ THE SIGNATURE. HE WAS AMAZED I READ IT AS ONE OF HIS EXPERTS, WHO WAS NATIVE BORN JAPANESE, COULD NOT READ THE ARCHAIC, SELDOM USED KANJI CHARACTERS. I OFFERED TO BUY AND NEVER SAW THE PIECE AGAIN.
THERE ARE UNLIMITED NUMBERS OF BOZOS WHO LEARN A FEW TERMINOLOGY WORDS IN JAPANESE AND THEN TRY TO PRESENT THEMSELVES AS "EXPERTS" AT ALL THE LOCAL GUN SHOWS. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU HAVE RUN IN TO ONE OR THE OTHER OF THE TYPE PEOPLE I HAVE DESCRIBED. I RECENTLY HELPED A GUY ON ANOTHER FORUM WITH HONEST INFORMATION REGARDING SEVERAL DECENT SWORDS HE OWNS. I EVEN OFFERED TO HELP HIM HAVE THEM RESTORED IF HE WISHED TO KEEP THEM. PRESENTLY, HE IS RUNNING A THREAD ASKING FOR HELP IN FINDING A COMPETENT APPRAISER AND SOME ONE WHO COULD HANDLE RESTORATION AND SALE OF THE ITEMS. DOES THIS SOUND REPETITVE?

If you took the time to look I don't know how you missed the thread on the naval para. I have made several good friends on this board who have helped me more then I can put down in this post. Swords are a hard business to learn. If you are mad about missing some local finds it may be past time to buy one of the many books about them. I really don't understand the thinking behind a post like this? Especially if you are wanting more advice on things you want to buy.

      Come on Scott...

I could have edited my original post... when I saw I was in error... and missed the posting on the Navy paratrooper helmet earlier.

My point was.... folks that collect Japanese stuff... don't seem to share comments on E-bay auctions... like other collectibles.

Again, I was man enough to say I was wrong, and I didn't try to hide it.

I do feel that folks who collect Japanese swords stay in small circles... and don't tend to share info. to help a novice.

      I collected helmets for years.

If someone says: "I have an old German helmet my grandfather brought back... and I don't want to sell... but... how much it's worth?"

I would tell them... for the sake they don't eventually throw it away, or sell it at a yard sale for a few bucks.

Well to be fare there have been threads here you could have posted examples of but did not. It was the boring remark that got to me. Even edited the thread title would remain. One thing I would like to point out about the Japanese collector in general is the responses on this thread. If this was posted on the German helmet board it would be page after page of worthless blither, attacks, & flame war. The responses here were tame and to the point. Like I said before I have made great friends here. I have been helped countless times. Most Japanese collectors are always willing to listen and help. Even the big guys will take the time to do this. One other thing that comes to mind are pictures of swords and pricing by them. I sold some swords recently and let me tell you they are not easy subjects. I took picture after picture and still did not do a great job IMO. They IMO are just tricky as the devil to judge by pictures. Another good point was the lack of good material out there to talk about. I think there is only one maybe two pages of Japanese helmets on the bay right now. Most if not all are common or crap. In contrast to maybe 10 pages minimum of German helmets and who knows how many pages of other material. Lets be honest about TR collecting. Its easy to keep busy when the crap is up to your eyeballs. That's not an attack on them or you that is the reality they face.

German collectors tend to be more anal about their collections, I could get a Japanese collector to let me shoot his baby nambu without any kind of negotiation. Try asking a German collector if you can shoot his K43. I will not say all german collectors are like this and not all japanese collectors are the way I described, I can garuntee you that I could find a German collector who would let me shoot his K43.

                Nice girl...

But... that hat's got to go...

If you notice my profile... I am still looking for a rich, young super model who also collects helmets...

                So far.... no luck.

Here's me... circa 1980 wearing my very first helmet.... a WWII US M-1 helmet I bought the day before for $4.50 at a surplus store in Denver.

Still had it.... up until a few years ago...
