    WW1 greatcoat 1916 dated

Got this on Estand with replaced civilian (horn) buttons. Other than that totally original and complete
and in very good condition considering it is already 101 years old! (1916 marked)

Very nice. I get BA XIII from stepping back from the markings, so would say a Württembergisches issue. Curious why you chose these buttons rather than standard military issue for replacement?

I already have a great coat with regular crown button, so got these buttons, which were sold to me as Bavarian buttons...
But after some research I realized these are for military administration...as this reference shows.
The non matching resin/horn buttons at the bottom were originally on it...all post war replacements...
Getting 8 totally matching large size mantel buttons is not easy so I am happy to settle with these non combat branch buttons.

                  I might even add these Verwaltungs Leutnant shoulderboards;
                  "Schulterstücke Beamter Leutnant, Unterlage Hochrot"
                  (administration shield cyphers missing)

Upon looking at those boards again, I think that they actually might be Bavarian. The Verwaltungs branch did also use blue threads, but I can't say I have ever seen an administrative board with this early 1915 style of subdued cords. Either way, it still needs some devices or numbers.

                    Regards,
                    Chip

P.S. That is a very nice coat and I agree with the B.A.XIII assessment.

Thanks Chip...Bavarian it is since the set also never had admin devices mounted....Yes very pleased with this coat.
                      Thanks for the expertise.

Nice coat, I've never seen buttons like that on a field gray uniform before.

Buttons have a period dull (matt) earth brown finish (or field gray?)... not a shiny bronze color for a dress uniform,
so it does match for field use...Who knows?

The buttons are for a civil servant--and these were uniformed non military with the same pomp and fanfare regarding uniforms. Basically you have a non military conversion to an issue Mantel.

Incidentally, Bavarian Army buttons, which would not go on this Mantel, have the double tailed rampant lion. Those would not likely have gone on a Mantel, since they are rather small in relation to the button holes. Also the Bavarian Mantel had a Feldgrau collar--not the contrasting green.

Essentially two button colours were painted, as I understand. If a unit wore silver/nickel on the Dunkelblau, they used a gray painted button on the uniform and aso the rank button (Gefreiter, Sergeant). If the buttons were Tombak or brass, that translated to a subdued colour that is more of a brown drab or dark mustard regarding painted buttons.
