Ok....the cap you linked is exactly what I was talking about. The sweatband is obviously recently replaced. A poor fit and mismatched wear. However, that does not mean the rest of the cap is automatically fake, it needs to be judged on it's own merits.
The cap probably is a fake, but as far as the fuzzy wool goes, this is the way it came off the loom. It's referred to as Melton wool and varying grades had varying amounts of "fuzz". It wore off fairly quickly with use and of course is the very first part of the wool that moths will consume. It is exceptionally rare to find an original WWI item with fuzzy wool and no mothing. Not impossible.....but close to it.
