Ok....the cap you linked is exactly what I was talking about. The sweatband is obviously recently replaced. A poor fit and mismatched wear. However, that does not mean the rest of the cap is automatically fake, it needs to be judged on it's own merits.

The cap probably is a fake, but as far as the fuzzy wool goes, this is the way it came off the loom. It's referred to as Melton wool and varying grades had varying amounts of "fuzz". It wore off fairly quickly with use and of course is the very first part of the wool that moths will consume. It is exceptionally rare to find an original WWI item with fuzzy wool and no mothing. Not impossible.....but close to it.

IMO, the cap is what it is stated to be. However, I don't believe the navy (vs seebataillon) buttons are correct for the chinstrap. It is my understanding that small gloss black buttons would be used, just as with the army field caps.

Thankfully yes. After initially getting cold feet I ended up sending it back only to retrieve it back from customs in Germany via Fedex after I had enough conclusive evidence that it was the real deal. I know Dave was of the opinion that the buttons probably shouldn't be gold plated crown buttons, but after digging up some photos I was able to find a cap with identical buttons (photo courtesy of Tony and his terrific Imperial website)

The prinz visor is super nice. I was looking at it myself.
