I just loaded a photo of the helmet into my photo editor to get a close up of one section. I played with all the settings and I think I might have a new tool to un cover the fakes.

Here is the close up. Really nice work, the chipping is the best I have seen for a fake.

However when you play with the adjustments, exposure, contrast, saturation Etc. You can un mask some of the techniques used.

The general impression this one leaves me with after adjusting the image is the faker went over board in the amount of chips and aging they did to the paint. The chips are in un likely places from what is normally seen.

I thought the helmet was good but with this photo I think it's bad. I am going to play with my originals in photo edit to see what real one's should look like when they are adjusted and compare to more bad helmet examples to see if this is a valid tool to be used.

There are so many fake camo's people are now comparing their fake camo's with other fake camo's . The trouble is is if we start telling all the things wrong then the fakers who are members will start to alter their fakes to a more convincing style . As you know if you bought this off a dealer they are worth a lot of money , all you need is a WW1 shell ( all over ebay ) and some paint an oven a bicycle chain or gimp whip some stain of some kind and voila your $150 shell is now worth $1000 . As a long-time collector I can't help but be more and more skeptical of any camo helmet out there after following this forum and others in recent years. Although I'd love to have one or two good examples for the collection these seem to be like I.D. badges and pins in the U.S. Civil War market. They've been faked for so long and so well that it's poisoned the water. It's kinda' discouraging so I think I'll just stick with my communications and signal gear, gas warfare, etc. It's hard to contest the authenticity of a field phone!

I did exactly that in your original thread. Are you fishing for a different outcome because the Dealer who sold you this helmet will not take it back?

from you Imperial guys as I know a few missed it.
Gary is in no way looking for as you say a "Different outcome".

My opinion of this helmet is still bad.
That liner does not belong in that or any original helmet and while I was reserving an opinion on the paint I think the new photos show it as bad bad bad.

I understand now. Apparently the seller of this helmet, WAF member and Dealer is not going to refund Gary his money paid for this faked camo helmet... sold as an original.

I see you threw the ball in his hands. Lets see where he runs with it.

Nothing is original apart from the steel shell and possibly the interior field gray paint. The camo paint looks to have been artistically applied directly onto the rusted metal surface to give the illusion of age and wear. I have seen two nearly identical versions of this sort of faked camo in-hand. If you look carefully you will see that there is no true wear to the surface and that the aged appearance to the paint is contrived looking. I doubt you will find a layer of factory applied Feldgrau paint underneath the camouflage. The liner pins look like the round-ended prong repros available on Manions in large numbers 15-20 years ago. The liner is a very bad modern reproduction.

Manions was one of many sources. WarHats (warhats_auctions/ebay) is currently selling the same rusted liner pins on ebay - Item #131236956744.
