Unfortunately, the red cross is not visible on this soldier.

A group photo of Red Cross personnel. I'm not sure what to make of the chevrons; rank or service stripes?

This final photo has puzzled me for a long time. Given the Sutterlein writing on the reverse, I presume these are German or Austrian personnel - perhaps a civilian agency? I suppose I couldn't rule out the Swiss...

              Thomas,

Regarding your photos...... I don't think the soldier in post #122 is a medic. That armband is just plain white. He is wearing a single ammo pouch.

The volunteer medical personnel had a ranking system, which was worn on the sleeve for the lower ranks. One chevron = Gruppenführer, two chevrons = Zugführer-Stellvertreter, three chevrons = Zugführer. These three ranks had plain shoulder straps.

The higher ranks were indicated on the shoulder straps. They were, Kolonnenführer-Stellvertreter, Führer einer Sanitätskolonne, Arzt (doctor) einer Sanitätskolonne, Vorstandsmitglieder der Landesvereine vom Roten Kreuz, Delegierte der Freiwilligen Krankenpflege and Johanniter-Ritter bei der Freiwilligen Krankenpflege.

You last photo shows what appears to be prison medics. I think the writing on the back is the names of the two men marked with an "X" on the photo.

Here are a couple of caps from my collection, a Krankenträger (carmine piping and band) from the XIV.A.K. (Baden) and a Sanitäter cap from medic attached to a Bavarian field artillery regiment.

Great caps Chip. Is it the blue band that signifies a sanitater?

Chip - The feedback is much appreciated.

                    Thanks,

                      RH,

The original field gray caps of the NCOs and enlisted men of the Sanitäts-Kompanien and Feldlazarette (Krankenträger and Militärkrankenwärter) were just like those of the infantry, but with a visor. That is, they had the red (ponceaurot) colored piping and band. The cap was the M1908 Dienstmütze mit Schirm. In 1915 the colors on the caps were changed so that the Krankenträger now had carmine (karmesinrot) piping (Vorstoß) and band (Besatzstreifen) and the Militärkrankenwärter had a dark blue (Dunkelblau) band with a medium blue (Kornblumenblau) piping.

This cap with the blue band and red piping is that of the Sanitäter-Mannschaften and -Unteroffiziere.

Amazing collection you have. I love the photo of the two Germans and donkey all wearing gas masks you have on the wall. I have a copy of that same photo in my collection room.
