All right then. That proves me wrong. Changes what I thought. I retract. It is still interesting that a Preußen cap was made in a Baden city.

I see Rove that your Schirmmütze is stamped E for Eigentum. You might find THIS article of interest.

That is interesting. It surely makes you wonder why though.

OK, I finally woke up and remembered what was unusual about Baden in regards to their uniform colours... It was the not the Kokarden (as proven) it was the collar rank buttons and shoulder strap cord for Einjährig-Freiwilliger (One year volunteer).

Baden soldiers did not wear a Baden rank button on the collar, they wore a Preußen button. And there was no Einjährig-Freiwilliger cord in Baden colours for the shoulder straps, they wore Preußen back/white. Duh...

OK, so who wore this Baden sergeant's size collar button?

Another consideration is that this cap might be from the Hohenzollernisches F.R. Nr. 40, which was garrisoned in Rastatt. Not a "Baden" unit.

Police? Customs? Rat Inspector? No idea. But it was not a Baden military rank button unless it pre-dates 1806 which I doubt.

I forgot about FR40, a Preußen regiment garrisoned in a Baden city; this was to encourage the locals not to mutiny again, after the bloodbath of 1849.

The Baden button is most likely from from some state associated official. I can find no reference to the Baden military wearing such a Wappen style button.
