The infantry caps were the most common caps, I think.

That is the reason why you still can find caps in very good condition until today.

The cockade (black-white-black) is Prussia.

Actually, seeing as the Schirmmütze was made in Rastatt, the soldier would have been Baden infantry.

Baden Mannschaften wore a Preußen Kokarde on their cloth headgear. Only on the Pickelhaube did they wear a Baden Kokarde.

Are you sure about that? I know that the Baden cap Kokarde was still being worn during the war. I have a B.A.XIV marked Krankenträger cap with the Baden Kokarde. It's also listed in Kraus as one of the Landeskokarden in use in 1907 for the new uniform.

I was, but not any more obviously. Would not be the first time I stuck my foot in my mouth. Not the last either.

This is based on my seeing and owning many Krätzchen over the years marked to Baden units with Preußen Kokarde. Can you show your Krankenträger cap Chip?

[Added] Just to clarify, I have only seen this on issued cloth ORs headgear. On private purchase caps it is always a Baden Kokarde.
