      Hello again,

      my previous post was simply suggesting that the writing of the back of the card could have been done years after the photo was taken and printed. The sailor was correctly identified as imperial.

      Regarding the handwriting: I have correspondence from my own family were the handwriting looks awkward and childlike, although the person who wrote it was well beyond 50 at the time! Please don't forget that the Nazis legislated against Fraktur in print, and introduced a new writing system in school. Even adults felt compelled to adhere to the new system and "unlearned" the trusted suetterlin style. This might have been the case with the writing in question.

      @John: I still read "Justus" rather than "Justine" simply for the fact that I have never come across the English name "Justine" in Germany. "Heymann" could also be "Hegmann" - the writing is ambiguous.
