This cap was for sale. The seller did not know the exact use of the cap. It looks like a Jäger zu Pferd cap, but with after war added insignia.

There were some half dozen Freikops that employed the Guard Star but my records indicate all were worn on the sleeve or collar. I would take heart in the fact that it didn't come from a dealer with some hyped-up story and that the Freikorps were a collection of free-wheeling guys who wore all sorts of stuff. One never knows.

It could be related to the Garde Kavallerie (Schützen) Division, which I believe was continued in some form after the war as a Freikorps unit.
I would suggest the German Feldgrau forum's Freikorp section. There are several very knowledgeable Freikorps experts there.
