    M16 camo, happy discovery

I've had this one for two or three years. But it wasn't until this weekend that I saw something . . . a unit marking.

I was showing the helmet to Ty Smith, and he was holding it out in sunlight, and discovered some numbers: 5./118 with two roman IIs underneath the 18. Picture attached.

I had seen the man's signature on the skirt, written in the older German handwriting, and was able to make out "Wehr. Wasser," but I never saw the numbers until the light hit them.

No big deal, but it's always nice to learn something about the stuff you own!

Dave, great discovery!! Nice cammo!! I love the wear! Nice M16 liner too! I have an standard fieldgray M16 that the same thing happened. There was no mention of any ID until I got it and found very similar writing in mine. Almost same type of ink!! Nice find! Mike.

            Space savers?

            Hi, Robb:

            What's spacesavers?

The other time I discovered something in sunlight was a slight inscription in an M40 liner: "PAK Zug"

The "Wehr." must be short for Wehrmann, as in Landwehr. 5.Komp. II.Batl. I.R.118 (Hessian).

Very attractive camo helmet. I've had similar revelations occur once or twice over the years.

What is the maker stamp on this one, possibly Q? Si.?

Thanks for the comments, guys. Hans, it's a Q 66.

And Chip, thanks for the info. I had figured out Wehrmann, 5th company, 118th hessian, but didn't know what to make of the roman numeral beneath.

Very nice original camo. There is no substitute for outside sunlight when looking over any collectable.

I seem to feel it says 5/ 148 with the name wrasser.(wehr, would that be wehrner) I have one or two written in with pencil(one austrian)also a german one , with american name scratched into the same areas.

Arent you glad you left it alone, and didnt have to clean it up to look perfect as many would , and do as many who never see, and ruin such marks with obsessive compulsive cleanliness.

Also appears to me ,like it was used by two soldiers , one looks like bilnffzer in the middle back, with his unit rubbed out just below, as maybe he was killed, and this other guy maybe lost his own , and grabbed this one , and possibly remarked it with pencil so he wouldnt lose it. Just a thought. I got a crick in my neck trying to read it,so maybe you can repost another rotated shot just for effect....so I could be all wet. I also imagined a smaller 88 next to the 5 to the right but smaller, like 588/ 148 , or maybe 588/ 6/48?? but then again , you may want to handle it by not touching too much on the written areas. Maybe ill see if i have any shots to show,as it could be a great thread with helmets with writing inside... but regardless..thats a great lid. An honest camo'd stahlhelm we all would be proud to own. maybe a little indoor lighting manipulation inside the house, or thru a photoshop program , may bring it out better. Kudos.

I've seen Werner spelled Wernher before, but never Werhner, unless it's a family (last) name. Also, the name written in the old cursive on the rear flange is in fact "Wasser", just like the printed name.

                          Thanks again

I typically don't clean anything off a helmet, and yes, in this case, I'm very glad I didn't try!

As for the numbers, it's clearly a 118. In the light, you can see the European-style "1"s next to each other, and a clear distinction between the 118 and the II underneath.

The name in the back of the skirt is Wasser's signature in the old-style German handwriting, so it matches with the printed name.

                          Thanks for the comments!
