    Four Stahlhem

I just yesterday collected these four helmets from a very large and old collection. Only the second from the top has a complete original liner and one of the others has just the liner band. The helmet I question is that which I will post the details of. The other three are just fine.

I didn't bother to photograph the interior as it is just fine. Original paint. The colors and style of the camo make me question it.

Note that when the helmet was painted it had liner retaining studs attached.

There is alot of old wear and abuse to the camo paint. I would like some candid and frank opinions as I already have a handful of Imperial camos in my collection and plan on selling these off.

Something about the paint, it's really smooth. Is it sprayed or brushed on? The age on the helmet looks genuine enough but the damage to the top looks a bit rushed as if someone took a spill on a motorcycle while wearing it.

Are any of them going to be for sale?

After seeing all the photos I think the aging looks too forced. That said it has some things going for it too. But gut feeling, I'd not by it.

They are all going to be for sale very soon. I am just trying to form a solid opinion on this one before I offer it.

I personally don't like it at all. IMO it's a bad post war (WWII) repaint. I have never seen these colors of paint on an original, and there's no real wear to it. When you compare it to the original camo's pictured... it doesn't even come close. Again, just my opinion.

If the other camo's were listed at a reasonable price I would not hesitate to make a purchase.

                Nice find.

I like it, at least from the pics. But then, I don't get hung up on supposedly "correct" colors. I have been looking at these since the 60's, and have seen many color variations right from the doughboy. Granted, some of the more colorful schemes were painted postwar as souveniers for the doughboys, but I believe these are a tiny percentage.
More alarmingly, some of the recent fakes are just about perfect.
Bottom line, with these, there is no substitute for a hands on inspection, sometimes even that's not enough.
                  Good luck.

Thanks for your input gentlemen. I am taking them to the Chantilly Virginia Militaria Show this weekend and will get a couple of friends to give me their thoughts after a hands-on inspection.

Shenandoah sounds like something out of The High Chaparal ( meant in a nice way) the thing that puts me of the helmet is the blackness and thiness of the dividing line ,I wonder if it was done by a Doughboy coming home .Rob

Well, it was at the show and within about one hour I had every serious collector and dealer theretrying to buy it. I've decided to buy it myself from the owner and keep it for my collection. I'll watch for a "scrubber" that has a liner and add that sometime in the furure and try to properly match the paint on the pins. I am not a dealer but collector and will never try to pass it off in the future as having the original liner.

I still have the first 1916 camouflage '16 I ever acquired that has no liner and I am a bit of a purist. I got that one at Fort Totten New York, where my dad was stationed, in 1956 when I was ten years old. I think that this one is a gem.

Not holding out. Been away for four days and my laptop is fried so this is my first opportunity back on the net. For those who have emailed and PM'd me I will get back to each of you in the order in which the messages were recieved. It will probably be in the AM as the little woman is in her usual tizzy over me being out of her control range for several days.
