leather or cloth (?) spiked helmets

    hey Guys, Glenn here. I dont usually post much in this area but I do dig WWI and have a nice little collection of it. so please excuse my terminology. I mainly deal with Third Reich gear. but my question is;

I have a nice leather/gray fittings EM's infantry spiked hemet and I always wanted an artillery of the same rank. I saw a nice one at the MAX and was contimplating about it when I saw another Guy who had nice spikes too. one was of the felt/cloth (?) type covering instead of the typical leather. I asked Him what was the reasoning for this and He stated the leather style were mainly used in the rear and for your walk out uniform, whereas the felt (?) were for front line action. I have seen these felt (?) ones before ofcourse but personally thought it would be the other way around. was He speaking the truth? were the leather ever used in the front line. any information on this would be greatly appreciated as I am not interested in even trying to obtain the artillery EM's if this is the case. thanks, Glenn PS, I know my chinstrap is a brass fitting one. bummer, I cant find any gray fitting ones. anyone know where I can get one?

            Glenn,
Leather Picklehaube were very widely used in front line service, albeit frequently with cloth covers.
To say that they were mainly worn for "walking out" is utter nonsense.
Felt helmets also known as "Ersatz" picklehaube were produced when leather stocks were in short supply.
It seems to me that this "DEALER" knew very little about the real history of the items he was selling.
            Regards,
            RAY.

thank you Ray. you know, even though most of my time is spent on the Reich I always loved WWI. actually All Quiet on the Western Front (saw it in 3rd. grade) was what changed my life into that of a military history lover. I think I spent more time (and still do) daydreaming about being a front liner than I do of chicks. ( I dont know if that would even be considered healthy. ) but from the knowledge I have learned in the past I (even from pics) I always thought they would. thats why this guy threw me for a loop. I guess he was hoping to get a quick buy from me. and thanks for the terminology= Ersatz. I knew it started with a "Ers". this guy couldnt even tell me that. he just said, they call it "felt". but thanks again. Glenn

                Hi Glenn

You might want to take a look at this website run by forum member Tony Schnurr (although I have heard a rumour that the collection really belongs to his Weiner dog*, and that Tony just runs the website.... ):

                www.kaisersbunker.com

...the best reference on-line for WWI German and Canadian uniforms and headgear, with some absolutely killer examples of pickelhaubes, plus a lot of info on their history, development and conservation.

                Cheers

                Paul.

*You'll get the joke when you visit the website....

What you will also find are numerous photos that are my property which have been used without my permission from Kaiser's Bunker in violation of international copyright law. I have tried dealing with this person, he is; how can I put this......less than pleasant. And as an information page, it is pretty sad. Wrong information, vague, spelling errors, and of course, stolen photos.

Paul, I appreciate the link. Glenn, did you go right to the On-line guide to Pickelhaubes? If not, here is the link. >> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/pt/

By the way, that is one perky little helmet you have there. Excellent high shape, very nice!

I seem to have stirred up a Hornet's Nest.
I am not a German WW1 expert, and was just trying to be of help to Glenn.
Bad news that your images have been ripped off.

                            Tony,

Actually I was trying to be kind by saying there were "some" errors on there. A few really jumped out and grabbed me!

As for the stolen photos, I'm sorry but I didn't know about that until now, so I'll be sure to ignore that site from now on!

Tony. yes, I went to your site. EXCELLENT! very informative. and thank you for the compliment on my helmet. I love it. I got it from Great War Militaria 13 years ago. I also had the chance to buy an artillery EM's in the same shape for a little over $700 but at the time I thought that was alot. I still kick myself for that one. it was very nice and you dont see them really. actually though, I would like to hear your Guys views on an artillery EM's I am going to post tomarrow evening. its for sale and Im pondering it. thread title will be; "artillery EM's helmet, opinions please." I would appreciate any thoughts/ comments on the piece as I have pics of all 4 angles and the interior. thanks again everyone and hope to hear from you Guys in my next thread. Glenn
