Another option would be to destroy the fake spange, lest it fall into the hands of someone else who tries to pass it off as the real deal down the road again.

Well spotted
That is the only known and accepted makers mark on Type-A 1870s
and it is very very rare. We have only seen maybe 3 or 4 of these over the years.
The mark is LL and depending book which book you believe could belong
to either "L. Lauer" or "Louis Lemcke" .
I attaching an enlargement of the maker's mark and also a picture
