    help needed - Ellerhoop 1897

Hello - I recently bought a small lot of Imperial medals at an auction and among them was this cross. It seems to be for military service (Militaer Ver.). On the left arm it says Eller-Hoop U. UMG. Which I take to refer to a small town in Scheswig-Holstein called Ellerhoop. U. UMG. I think means "und Umgebung' which would be "and surrounding area". On the right arm it says ZU ELLER-HOOP" and the bottom arm says 1897. Seeing as it's from Schleswig-Holstein I thought it may relate to veterans of the Schleswig wars in 1848-51 and 1864 but unless my math is really bad 1897 doesn't represent an obvious anniversary (ie. 25 or 50). If anyone can help me clarify this I would very much appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance
    Curt

here is an overall look including the ribbon which I, of course, have no idea if it belongs to this medal.

It's a veteran's association commemorative cross. 1897 would be the founding date. WII in the center is Kaiser Wilhelm II. The ribbon is not for this cross. I suspect if the cross had a ribbon, it was red, white and blue, the colors of Schleswig-Holstein. Or, it may have been suspended from the generic Deutsche Kriegerbund pin, as were many of these local vet association crosses and medals.

            Hi Curt,

as addition to the correct comment in Post 3:

It is the "Kriegerverein Ellerhoop und Umgebung", a section direct in Ellerhoop (zu Ellerhoop), and not a section in the surrounding locations. The other places might have their own crosses, e.g. with the addition "zu Tornesch" instead of "zu Ellerhoop".

thank you very much for the info on the ribbon tompress. Now that I see what you posted it's pretty clear and I suspected it was not correct.

Thanks Uwe for your excellent clarification as well. That certainly explains the zu Ellerhoop.
