Patriotic Items from WWI

1. A beautifully-embroidered cloth bearing an emblem with 1914 date and the words, "Lieb' Vaterland, magst ruhig sein!" (Dear Fatherland, be at Peace) which is found in the refrain of the song "Die Wacht am Rhein":

2. Here is a tin box with military motifs depicting army, navy (note U-Boat) and airforce (note Zeppelin) with an Iron Cross at each corner on the top. The top lid is hinged. The only marking on the tin is "Muster Geschuetzt" (Patent Protected) found on the rear side of the lid. The measurements are approximately 19.5cm. x 13.5cm. x 7.5cm. Inside is a piece of old (no date present) German newspaper apparently from Berlin. I suspect that such tins - perhaps containing chocolate, cigarettes, etc. - were sent as gifts to the soldiers, much the same as the British gift tins of 1914. Those tins that survived could perhaps have been used by veterans after the war to hold wartime souvenirs and perhaps even their medals and awards.
