    Patriotic Items from WWI

Showing here two items for your viewing pleasure and comment:

    1. A beautifully-embroidered cloth bearing an emblem with 1914 date and the words, "Lieb' Vaterland, magst ruhig sein!" (Dear Fatherland, be at Peace) which is found in the refrain of the song "Die Wacht am Rhein":

    per Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Wacht_am_Rhein:

"Die Wacht am Rhein" (The Watch/Guard on the Rhine) is a German patriotic anthem. The song's origins are rooted in the historical French–German enmity, and it was particularly popular in Germany during the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War."

    Refrain
    Lieb Vaterland, magst ruhig sein,
    lieb Vaterland, magst ruhig sein,
Fest steht und treu die Wacht, die Wacht am Rhein!
Fest steht und treu die Wacht, die Wacht am Rhein!

You can listen to this song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zikcHnimsxk

The outside measurements of the cloth are approximately 55 cm. x 41 cm.

        2. Here is a tin box with military motifs depicting army, navy (note U-Boat) and airforce (note Zeppelin) with an Iron Cross at each corner on the top. The top lid is hinged. The only marking on the tin is "Muster Geschuetzt" (Patent Protected) found on the rear side of the lid. The measurements are approximately 19.5cm. x 13.5cm. x 7.5cm. Inside is a piece of old (no date present) German newspaper apparently from Berlin. I suspect that such tins - perhaps containing chocolate, cigarettes, etc. - were sent as gifts to the soldiers, much the same as the British gift tins of 1914. Those tins that survived could perhaps have been used by veterans after the war to hold wartime souvenirs and perhaps even their medals and awards.

Any and all comments will be appreciated.

Hope you enjoy seeing these items.

        Regards,

        John

              Very nice
I like this kind of Imperial miscellany.

The embroidery on that piece is fantastic.
