    The combination makes no sense. Where is his EK2 from WW1? Perhaps it is a salesman example.

      Of course, you're absolutely right. I didn't stop to think of that. I agree that the pin was likely a random, cobbled together salesman sample and later put with the full-size badge. The combination on the stickpin is impossible. There should be an EK and a wound badge.

        Especially for this award are a lot of stupid criteria flying towards the Net.

        1. Besitz der hessischen Staatsangehörigkeit mindestens seit 1. August 1914;
        2. mehr als 2jährige Zugehörigkeit zu Verbänden, deren Tätigkeit, abgesehen von zeitweiligem Aufenthalt in Ruhe- oder Reservestellung, sich dauern im wirksamen Bereich feindlichen Feuers abspielt. In die 2 Jahre vom Tag des Ausrückens ab ist die Zeit des Aufenthalts in Lazaretten und in der Heimat nicht einzurechnen, welche 2 Monate übersteigt;
        3. ein oder mehrmalige Verwundung
        4. Tapferkeit und gute Führung
        Must not be born in Hesse
        Must nor be awarded with the EK or Hessian Bravery Medal.
        (Must not be awarded with the Wound Badge)

        There only is written: "one or more times wounded". Nothing about the Wound Badge. So the Question is: Must every single wounding lead to the Wound Badge?

        Same but a little bit more special and clear is the case with EK.
        There is written: "bravery and good behaviour". Not every bravery leads to the EK. But this point of the criteria is fulfilled.

        The KEZ could be awarded with other hessian decorations.

        On period photos the combination KEZ, EK, VWA is seen often, rather without wound badge.
        I also have seen a guy wearing only the KEZ. Or the KEZ, EK, VWA combination with the Hessian Bravery Medal.

          Definitely must not be awarded with the EK:

          Verordnungsblatt Nr. 16 (vom 24. März 1917)
          https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...rdenHessen.jpg

          Nr. 156:
          Allgemeine Bestimmungen ...: Die genannten Kriegsauszeichnungen können verliehen werden, wenn die Vorgeschlagenen sich einer Auszeichnung würdig gezeigt haben, unter der Voraussetzung, daß sie hessische Staatsangehörige sind oder in hessischen Verbänden stehen oder früher längere Zeit gestanden haben. Der Besitz des Eisernen Kreuzes ist nicht Vorbedingung; nach dem Erwerb des Eisernen Kreuzes oder anderer Kriegsauszeichnungen müssen aber erst erneute Verdienste hinzugetreten sein, ausgenommen im Falle schwerer Verwundung.

              A frontline medic would have gotten with swords... anyone in the operational zone got swords, even divisional clerks and doctors at large rear area hospitals.

                So the question is again open,
                Sounds like a combatant award but in the stickpin it is beside two non-combatant awards.
                Who or what kind of personel would qualify for this rare combo,
                a chaplain?

                  There is no possible criteria that would allow this.... and absolutely no Hessen award? Veeeeery unlikely.

                  I am guessing the Dispaly board piece is the correct guess.
