A no again ,,,no problem Greg ,
just in case someone starting to believe there just one blueing methode ,
here a interesting wiki link .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluing_%28steel%29 ps again applied on steel

        I count 5 methods

and this interesting frame found there ,razed many questions to me
        Limitations
Bluing only works on steel or stainless steel parts for protecting against corrosion. Because it changes the Fe into Fe3O4,
In my period jeweller books I found 7 different recipe's to blacken Iron,,,,,, specially used by the jewellers .

together 12 methods,,,of who I think 3 actually having a blueish black look.

        .

        regards kay

Sorry to get back so late to this thread.

Here's an 'R'-marked cross with what I consider to be a 'blackened' core...

              Kay,

Here are some more that I think may be 'blackened'. The last of the four may have a painted core.

              Marked 'HB' and 'N'...

these I would think there's a black layer over the iron ,,, drukerschwärze of some kind ,,, I would say, ( sort of paint )

                  just my opinion..
and ,,sure,,, so far highly speculative ,,as it is a visual assessment...

you holding it in hand ,,and , are closer to a reliable judgement as I am

                  regards kay

OK, good enough. None of them were as obvious as the full-sized cross I posted before these.

                    Thanks Kay,

my two crosses have the centre that's blued like a gun's barrel/frame; perhaps, the picture doesn't give the proper appearance of the iron surface and its treatment.

Actually, the centre can be made of pressed sheet-iron.

What's interesting to see, is the "star" mark struck on the ring, testifying that the cross was made of non-precious metal and manufactured in Austria, prior to 1918 (surely, for private purchase). Although of different size, the Prinzengröße is almost identical to the full-size piece.

                            Best wishes,

                            E.L.
The crosses you show has been attributed to C F Zimmermann - Pforzheim for some time now. Maybe they added the star mark because of export to Austria or the star means something else. Have so far not found any star on Austrian made orders that matches the Zimmermann star. Crosses with the star was found in the bombed out Zimmermann factory in Germany. There's also a 'Blued Core Zimmermann type' EKII marked 'HUW' on ring which is believed to be a Austrian maker/retailer.

Own and owned several 'Blued Core Zimmermann type' crosses and did some comparising to Blued guns made from 60s up to the 90s. Firmly believe the end result 'blueing' is same but there's several methods to achieve it. It produces a very slick bluish/black surface that can be different in hue but looks nothing like the "blackening" found on 1813s, 1870s and early 1914s. Core on those crosses are very prone to surface rust if not taken care of properly, just like the guns.

Here's core details of 2 'blued core Zimmermann type' Prinzen.

An 'LW' 1914 EKII. Different than the 'blued' and not like the "1813-1870 cast core blackening". Looks almost like something in between the "blackened" methods and the 'blued' ones.

Always thought there's 2 different "groups of methods" (blueing and blackening) with 2 different end results. Seems like it's time to revise that thought...
