    Ek1 and 2 Doc group, can read rank

    I have three documents to a Nissum. I can not read what rank this guy is. The docs include the EK1 and 2 as well as wound badge. The EK2 doc is signed by a PLM winner and I have attached his pic. Can anyone help the the rank of Nissum?

                This rank would translate into "officer candidate"?

                  Deputy Officer

                  Hi Paul,

                  in a word no. The Offizier-Stellvertreter were SNCO's, usually in the rank of Vize-Feldwebel appointed in wartime to the position of a "deputy" officer in Leutnants positions if officers were lacking or absent. An appointment and not a rank, these individuals usually commanded platoons. The NCOs so appointed wore tress around three sides of the shoulder strap in a similar fashion to the later Reichsheer and Wehrmacht rank of Unteroffizier and officer pattern metal shoulder insignia (number or cipher). A fairly strange setup in similar vein to the Feldwebel-Leutnant basically because of the Imperial German reluctance to commission NCOs.

                  Regards
                  Glenn

                          Offizier=Stellvertreter

                          Guys;

                          Great discussion, and one relating to a burning question. I and my writing partner are grinding out text, and we are trying to decide the best English language term to use for Offizier=Stellvertreter; Deputy Officer or Acting Officer. Any opinions? I think either would be servicable.

                          Have seen one or two mentions of a "Infantry-Pioneer-Company", but don't know anything about them.

                          Question from nowhere - Have a couple of pre-war Dienstalterslisten, but would a war-time one, say 1916 or 1917, have Leutnant d. Reserve oder Hauptmann d. Reserve listed? I am guessing not, as they don't seem to be long enough, but I have never seen one.

                            I always think Proxy officer would be the most accurate translation.

                              Hello, an Infanterie-Pionier-Kompagnie was not a strange or rare thing. In sectors where they had to do a lot of work in the trenches, this was quite a substantial unit. It was not a real company, the Gräbenoffizier (and a few other technical officers) just got enough men to do all the Pionierarbeit. Nothing unusual about that...
