It might be the picture, but it looks like the dimensions of the arms of this cross are not the same.
(Like the bogus schinkels that keep popping up)

    regards,

I don't like the paint and low details. The paint looks like hardware store flat black spray paint.

I have seen an alot of a " new batch" of KO marked EK1's on ebay with this same bad paint and low details.

Hi Biro, I don't have the cross as yet. It has been offered to me for sale and as usual if I've not seen it before I post it here. It does look square to me. My initial thoughts were inter war production.

I've been biting my tongue, but Rick touched upon a salient fact that I noticed right away when this item initially came up for review.

The hinge plate is not SHAPED correctly and is closer in form to the current fakes than to the authentic crosses made during this time period.

Also, the catch is waaaay off target, IMO.

              Sorry, Glenn.

I still have to swim against the current. I by no means put my hand in the fire for this piece but still believe that it is worth a closer look.

A guy making a cross in 1926 could have put any kinda hinge he wanted, and if he found a wider catch more stable and the cost not prohibative...

There are signs that should make you look carefully at it before you finally make your choice, but Personally I think an automatic "kill" button could be wrong in this case.

In my experience, heavier pins warranted heavier catches.

Putting a fat catch on a cross with a slender pin would be a waste of material from a jeweler's point of view. No matter when the thing was made.

As Rick mentioned--if this were a deluxe example, more attention would have been devoted to the finish of the core, and if it were at best a post WW2 example one would expect an even better type of finish to the core than what we are viewing. I would expect it to be glossy.

Glenn, when you get the cross have it checked for silver content. I would be surprised to learn that this one is .835

                  I betcha it's a reworked cross.

Which reproes show the hinge plate style on the pictured cross?

Patina looks modern painted. Pin/catch is weird. Core is unprofessional. I don't believe in the "jeweler made it" catch-all. A jeweler just one offs a steel core EK? Not likely. A one-off set of dies to an EK we never see? Not likely.

                          Hi Guys,

                          Devils advocate here again

                          1) patina... I have a mint Wagner that was polished about 3 years ago... it has EXACTLY the same patina... I dont think there is anyone who can call this cross on patina.

                          2) Unproffesional core?
Check this Jewller made EK1 core out... even worse...init?

Thick catch? This looks repaired... but it is dirt under the grooves of the plate not solder so a difficult call. I would go with repaired... but the jeweller thought thick was better.

I am not saying said cross is good, but I cant say it is bad either. I personally dont think it is a call that can be made from the photos shown.

Difficult to see on this photo of a Wagner piece, but the hinge is also minimally off and the Patina is the same as the pictured on although it does not photograph well.
