The picture had been taken in Metz (Elsass) and it seems as if this Lt is
referring to some reconnaissance missions when they got lost ....
Elsass became "Reichsland" (State Territory) after 1871 and thus you
find troops from about any kingdom in Germany ....
even my dear grandfather had been stationed there !

Wolf is right. 8th Bavaria Infantry Regiment (8. bayer. Infanterie-Regiment Großherzog Friedrich II. von Baden), stationed in Metz.
Lt. Johannes Müller. In the 1909 Bavarian Militär-Handbuch, he was a Lt. in the 8.Kompanie. According to the Ehrenrangliste, he died just before the war, on 17 May 1914.
