I believe it's good. The pin is a rather crude later addition and if possible, should be removed. This was originally a sew-on badge as indicated by the 8 holes - not that common a type.

If it's steel it's probably later wartime and the hardware looks period (wartime to 20s) to me - there is no way I would be destroying history by removing it (aside from the mess it would leave).

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

If you PM/contact me without the courtesy of using your first name, please don't be offended if I politely ignore you!

Yes, you're right. It was a stupid suggestion on my part. The pin, as ugly as it is is part of the history and likely was done for a little extra security in attaching it to the uniform.

Juncker war time issue badge in tombak. Originally sew on and converted to pin back. Leave the pin on !!!! Part of the history. Ferg

Thanks Ferg for identifying the maker.
I can't seem to find a lot of these sew on badges on the forum. Are these sew on badges more rare than the normal pin back pilot badges?

What is the reasoning that there was a standard sew-on type? Is that documented somewhere? Sales catalogue? Anywhere?

Doesn't make sense to me. Sounds more reasonable that it is an unfinished piece that someone first drilled holes in and then later decided to give it an attachment pin.

Sew on examples are alot less seen than their pin back brothers. For whatever reason they were altered this way, be it in the factory or later they appear to be legit war time pieces. They are seen in photos from time to time, Immelmann amongst others wears a sew on in his sanke card picture. They normally have no evidence of a standard pin or catch having being attached on at outset so we must take it that they were created like that from birth ! Personnel preverence I guess. Ferg

Do not know if this is going to help but does anybody have another sew-on badge so we can compare the hole pattern?

Baldes's new book for pilot badges has good pictures of several ones.

It's worth it's price for pilot badge collector, it's anyway a small investment compared to original badge prices (especially if it helps to avoid fake one)
